Xantia drive shaft

Unread post by shiney »

Hi
Local mechanic says I need a new drive shaft. Quoted about £100 for part and £40 labour. Can this be done fairly easily by an amateur or is it too fiddly?
Does the price quoted seem OK?

Thanks

The price is about right if he's getting it in for you-he's put his margin on, but take a look in the online shop and you could buy it for him, even if you can't fit it, which would save a bit.
£40 fitting is probably about right, maybe a little on the cheap side as its about an hours job time.
You can do it yourself- its not hard but you do need a big socket for the hubnut, there's lots of advice on here on how to do it, though!!!
Why does he say you need a new one, though?

It's making a horrible rumbling noise especially in 2nd and 3rd gear he had a test drive and diagnosed it from the ,noise - ruled out clutch etc.

Sounds like quite a reasonable price for a garage, if its the O/S one you have the centre bearing to contend with as well which can take extra time.
