BX Weekend - Rallying the troops!

Unread post by vanny »

Hi folks, well after blowing up (hopfully just) the turbo, im about to finish the exams and hope to get the car rebuilt and back on the road this weekend!
There are a short list of things to do, i wont list them all again incase your put off, but the engine looks like it WILL be coming off and lots of rewiring and rebuilding getting done!
Some people have expressed interest (or coersion) into helping where they can (or just laughing at me!), and if your still willing then id love to get some help!
Oily Spanner has already 'volunteered', and is coming on Saturday morning to get it all started! I'd be greatful for any additional help, and if your interested then please let me know on here (and or email me) and i can send you instructions on where to go!
I can't promise military precision, but i can probably manage a BBQ for lunch, the odd beer, and a nice garage to work in if you need anything minor doing on your own car! I will also endevour to have the parts department back up to date and tidy so if there is any BX bits you want then feel free to drop in and scrounge! I've got everything from side repeaters and door rubbers to entire doors etc!
thanks for the continued BX madness!

thought it wasnt nice to not let you in on the jobs so here they are, in no real order;

[*]new clutch
[*]sort leak in PAS
[*]droplinks (both sides)
[*]replace rad and intercooler
[*]instal twin fans and possibly secondary tow pack electrics
[*]replace all locks
[*]n/s rear arm bearing
[*]sort central locking on drivers side and add to passenger side
[*]fix heater matrix valve
[*]wire in rev counter
[*]add magic one up/down to passenger side
[*]wire in CB aerial and unit
[*]rewire head lights and starter motor
[*]recon starter motor
[*]rear pads and discs possibly

i think i have just about everything but i might need to get

[*]A kit for the PAS,
[*]secondary electric hook up (the white one for the tow bar)
[*]oil/antifreeze/filters etc
[*]box oil
[*]undercoat/waxoil
[*]welder (you havent seen the size of the intercooler yet!
[*]big ish rad (something Xantia TD sized)

if you can help with any of these parts i'd be very greatful as having not worked during my exams im on the poor side of skint!

Vanny - would come if i could, but essential surgery on Vera, plus wrath of the wife mean I cant. Unless you are having another pop next weekend, in which case I will be there.

I'd be looking at a BX TD rad if you can get one. But then I realised that this needs a header tank to work. I then thought "ZX TD" but remembered the stupid bayonet stylee bottom hose fixing.
Concludes, you need a nice big thick rad for a TD with conventional bottom hose and no header tank.Thinks......205TD!!!

Vanny.
Have you made a final decision about the health of your engine yet? I still have this mint 1769TD engine here (with a barely worn clutch) which is yours for about half the price of a new clutch. That includes delivery, and a weekend of assistance in fitting..... I would say it's for free, but it'll be a fair trek up there!
I would quite like that BX MK1 wheel bearing that you have kicking about, if only as "insurance" to make sure I never have one fail! and there's no doubt some other bits and pieces you've got that would go quite nicely on the BX Digit.
As for other items on the list... I have a small pile of XUD geared starters (oh, and one comes on the TD engine of course!)
Would a 405TD rad do? and maybe the fans from either 405TD or 309D... I have both kicking about.
and a welder. No problem.
And thankfully, an estate 405 to bring it all up in..... (Yeah Yeah, I know, It should be coming up in a BX, with the suspension nice and level, and no headlamps in the sky. It was cheap, and it's diesel... OK! At least it's french.)

Marty and Jon, the follwoing weekend is absolutley no use as i'm working at the French Car Show (and getting the Activas and BX16vs sorted!) and really im hoping to have it sorted by then! Other wise its the AX for me!
Jon,
i have a BIG BX rad but i think i'll have airflow problems and possibly problems with the connections and clearance as having the Xantia engine and pump, i have the alternator right on the front!
Dave,
prognosis at the moment is that the turbo is dead, but i havent had the time to really have a good look! here's hoping thats all it is as oilyspanner has kindly sourced me a turbo! All in all i think i have quite a few parts (loads fo fans etc) and should be able to do it!
If your free and want to play then feel free to bumble up, i'll try and add to your fuel fund but i am to say the least strapped for the pennies (havent been working for two months and its made a HUGE dint in the pocket!)

ah well the problme is if you start driving all over the planet with groups of friends you realise the phone bills are a little on the stupid side and you might as well go pick up a CB and have running rediculous comentary! It allcame out of a LiverpoolLandroverOwnersClub day out, the CB really made the day!

Vanny... Roughly where are you? I am seriously considering drifting up there anyway, as it would be quite a hoot to come and work on a BX, and would give me some experience before tackling the Digit. I can also bring a welder. I'm in two minds about bringing this engine anyway, as it would be a real arse to find that yours is damaged, and you need one. Vice-versa, if I bring it, and yours is fine, then it's a bit of a waste of effort... Hmmmm.

I am interested in working with others on my BX, and helping others on theirs. I can provide little technical input other than lifting/holding/handing things over, but I'm a quick learner. If anyone is interested in a meet in the Essex/Kent/Sussex area, let's get one going for late June early July. Any takers?

Dave the car/parents/tools are on the Wirral, just south of Liverpool (post code CH60 7RY) it's pretty easy to get to though! If the head has gone then Oily Spanner has an engine locally and i guess between us we could probably go get it and put it in all in one day (so long as i can find the pannies for it!) it needs a head gasket and bolts but thats about it really!
If you really fancy coming up then i can probably provide you a bed to sleep in over night if you give me some warning (sibling is in South Africa till July so probably wont notice!

David
If that 17TD is not required, then I will take it off your hands, and could collect whenever. I'm in Wiltshire. Let me know cost/location.
"Oscar Too", that sounds like a good plan, pop over to www.bxclub.co.uk/forum and I guess they'll do the rest!
