What kind of silicone for a leaking sump?

Post by czenda »

Hi, I am planning to change engine oil and I want to stop it from leaking around the sump. Will standard "bathroom" silicone do? It says on the package that it will withstand 180 centigrades, which should be enough.
Thanx.

Yes. De-grease mating surfaces well.

Hi
Your friendly Citroen / Peugeot dealer will sell you the correct special Loctite sealent for the sump for around £10.

To be honest, the best stuff I have found for oil-wetted parts is Acrylic bathroom sealant. It's dirt cheap, and being non-oil based, isn't diluted by oil/fuel etc. It also doesn't stink like Silicone does.
