xantia rear end "hardness"

my 1996 1.9xud td xantia [130,000mls]....started to feel hard at the back....rough roads/surfaces made a bang bang thump feel ,,,not the usual rollover smoothness....i had rear spheres renewed last week....no real change.....any pointers welcome.
