2.0 HDI Diesel Pump

Post by Peyote »

Hi,
The deisel pump on my xantia (2.0 HDI 90bhp) was leaking from the top cap (4 T40 star drive bolts). (Im talking about the pump located in the engine bay).
With the top cap removed, the seal was damaged, and the surface of the underside of the cap (that is pressed against the seal) was pitted although not deeply - as too was the pump side surface. The seal was torn - not all the way, but was almost (near the "eye" section). The surface was took back a little with a flat plate + wet'n'dry, and some instant gasket applied to the surface (sparse amount) and the seat for the seal.
More importantly (i think), the spring on the assembly was cracked at both ends, so we made another. This new spring is not the same strength, but is in the right ball-park.
The pump is now fine, but probably needs a proper fix,
Can you buy parts for the pump (Bosch) seperatly?
The car usually starts on the second turn of the starter motor. After "fixing" the pump the car now takes 3 or 4 to start, and if the car is stopped after a long run, then you attempt to restaert it, it takes more.
When the car starts, its fine, it starts clean, with no smoke screens or nasty end-of-the-world noises.
Has anybody come across this before? What exactly do the internals of this part of the pump do?
cheers guys,
P

I'm not sure if spares are available for the pump, you would be better off asking a Diesel fuel injection specialist. If the part you are talking about has an orange multiplug attached to it, it's the piston deactivator for that cylinder of the pump. When full fuel pressure is not needed, a one of the three (the top one) pistons is shut down to make the pump more efficient.

the only seperate parts available sepeatley for the HDi pump (from citroen anyway) is the fuel pressure regulator on the rear of the pump & its seal.

no rossd is right, the part on the top with the orange plug is the 3rd piston deactivator electrovalve, the regulator is on the rear of the pump with the white plug.

I had teh ame trouble with the Bosch pump on my company Audi A4TDi (yr 2000) - it stareted leaking quite badly from the top of the pump under the 4 set screws you mention. I took it to VAG and they fitted a new gasket for about £50. It lasted a week, after which they admitted they hadn't scraped the (pitted, would you belive?) surface of the pump and cover, and replaced it again free (and I got a TT to loan!!).
So it seems this is not an uncommon problem, and VAG seem to be able to get gaskets for them . . .

But VAG engines use a completely different pump and fuel injection system...

Indeed, but if VAG can get the gaskets from Bosch . . . . (and the pump is actually quite similar)
