Rear suspension leak

Post by Gareth Wales »

LHM - or rather Hydraflush - is leaking from a (so far only slightly) perished part of the rubber gaiter next to the rear suspension unit clip rod. What's the prognosis? Presumably the gaiter is there to keep the dirt out and not keep LHM in, so is this likely to mean a new rear unit

Can you clean the area for a better diagnosis ?
Ideally there should not be any leaks from the gaiter. But some LHM is designed to bypass the bore/piston seal to keep it lubricated. This is the rearmost (towards cylinder) leak off pipe from the gaiter.
The front most leak off pipe is aereation of the bellow - ends dead end inside the rearframe X-tube.
The rear cylinders are reputed for a sudden rupture by corrosion.
Commonly the problem shows itself if you set the suspension to high. Then any deep corrosion will suddenly break thru and shower out LHM all over the rear area - because of the max system pressure now applied.

OK Gareth -
Firstly we ARE indeed talking about your BX - right [:)]
1) The suspension cylinder comes complete with boot, clamp, piston & rod.
- but it does NOT come with seal for the pipe or the sphere seal

2) the cylinder boot (gaiter or bellow) comes withOUT the special boot clamp
95 577 323 cylinder boot
26 140 919 boot clamp diam 56
Finally : you should know that a rear cylinder assy for the Xantia (saloon) is approx half the price as the BX rear cylinder assy. But you then need to slightly modify the Xantia cylinder. Also the Xantia boot and rod is too short for the BX - so you need to buy this extra - or re-use the old.
Otherwise the Xantia cylinder assy is the exact same as the BX.
As you will have the parts posted anyway - you could as well try GSF.
