The one on the XM is in the bottom of the N/S mirror and they pack up for a pastime, out of four XMs only one had a working sensor. The XM one is the same as the C5 they are about £17:00 from Citroen. Instead of having to take the door panel off, I pulled the leads a few inches out of the mirror and soldered and sleeved the new leads, after shortening them, then poked the loose bits back in the mirror. Worked a treat.

It's the same sensor used in just about all Pug/Cit, and I believe Renault vehicles too. I paid £18 for a new one from Pug dealer, although they do turn up in scrappers every now and then. As far as I know it's basically just a thermistor in a chunk of resin, so £18 seems a bit steep to me, but that's dealer prices. Always located in the bottom of the left rear-view mirror. You should be able to see a "button" about 10mm diamater. Thats it.

On both my Xantias (95 and 97), the sensor is/was in the RH mirror.
On my previous Xantia, the reading was always at least 20 degrees too high, or off the scale, but I measured the resistance of the sensor, and convinced myself that the display unit was faulty. Never got around to pulling the dash to fix it.
