Spheres re gas or replace?

Unread post by c.morewood »

Being a relative newbie to the maintainance on my Xantia. could anyone fill me in on the advantages of replacing Spheres rather than having them regassed. Do they have a finite life after which thy need replacing?
Thanks

These days there is very little difference in price between regassing and replacing spheres so I always replace.

Depends to some extent where you are - in UK GSF and others supply good quality new spheres at a price that makes re-gassing uneconomic but this isn't the case everywhere.

There is a rumour amongst some indies that the spec. of replacement sphere is different to originals in respect of hole diameters, membrane material and life, etc. Some will only fit originals, even though they dislike trading with Citroen parts people.
Can Jon give the full dooberie on this?

Thanks everyone. Is there any difference between original Citroen Spheres and aftermarket... other than the price?

The genuiune new spheres you get from the Citroen dealer are the double layer membrane type now and they last much longer than the older single membrane types.
I've always replaced spheres, I used to buy remanufactured spheres but I found they didn't last very well, even the genuine Citroen reman spheres didn't have a very long life and would tend to go rock hard suddenly rather than slowly firming up.

Is there any way to tell if a sphere is a double membrane type by looking at it or from its part number ? Do you know when they were first introduced ?

You should be able to tell multilayer spheres...
If they are not genuing citroen spheres then they are not multilayer.
If they are genuine citroen spheres they are multilayer if they are painted grey or if they are green with 3 dimples surrounding the filler bung.
You can also tell by the part number on the sphere.
