C5 HDi 110 Cambelt Change

Post by andrewhall »

Hi All
Looking for some advice.
I am about to get my Timing Belt Changed on the C5 HDi 110.
It's on 96,000 Miles (6000 Miles of which I have owned the car with trouble free motoring! - Trip to France coming up soon). This will be it's first belt change.
Should I be looking at getting anything else changed at the same time (Tensioners - I think there are two ???, Water Pump e.t.c.)
Would I have any more piece of mind using a Citroen Belt as opposed to a GSF supplied one?
I am not going to do it myself (Local garage) but is it any bigger job than doing it on a Xantia 1.9TD for example?
Any help/comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Andrew

there is nothing wrong with the GSF belts (used about 10 now wiht no problems), i would out of choice replace the water pump and tensioners but that i believe is mostly because i am picky.

GSF supply Dayco belts which are what come in the Citroen boxes anyway - at about 3 times the price...
Make sure they check the crankshaft pulley - well known failure of the rubber damper can cause all sorts of havoc. In fact, if it's never been replaced, I'd do it as a matter of course whilst the belt is being done.

Ive finally bitten the bullet and Im getting my cambelt done next week on my xsara hdi (getting quite paranoid as its on 94K and as far as I know hasnt had a belt change yet!). Did consider doing it myself but didnt have the balls [:I] - looks like a nightmare in Haynes.
Going to get the alternator belt changed too as its going to be off anyway- on GSF it doesnt list a belt for a hdi with aircon, only without, does anyone know whats what?
Heres what theyve got diesel-wise:- Im guessing the'6pk'- means 6 in a pack - I would only need one...
N13343 ALTERNATOR BELT-6PK 1130 XSARA 1.9D/TD NO AIRCON
N13344 ALTERNATOR BELT-6PK 1740 XSARA D/TD +A/C;
N13350 ALTERNATOR BELT-6PK1468 XSA 2.0 HDi NO AIRCON
N13359 ALTERNATOR BELT-6PK 1750 XSARA 1.9D/TD/DW8 98> +PAS+A/C
N13371 ALTERNATOR BELT-6PK 1388 XSARA 19D(DW8) +PAS,
Also out of interest, what does the cambelt tensioner 'set' comprise?
N13060 CAM BELT TENS SET XSARA 2.0 HDi 36.50
Cheers

I think 6pk is refering to the ribs on the belt.
My cam tentioner set on my BX comprised of a tensioner and an idler. If you are unsure, give them a ring.

the 1750 probably refers to its length or something as one of the belt suppliers uses a similar numbering system and the belt you require is the 1750 which is used by ford, Volvo, VW, Fiat to name a few.

It's the lager that comes in a 6pk. As Dave says: it's the number of ribs on the belt. The 3 or 4 figure number is the length of belt in millimetres.

Picked them up before, for future ref if anyone does a search HDi aircon version alternator belt is-gsf number N13344 and its the 6pk 1740 one (10 squids before VAT) according to their catalogue. So I HOPE its the right one, wont be happy if it isnt [V]
They do their job well in there! Persuaded me to get the tensioners as well. Its a dear do this car ownership! You cant beat spending money thant you dont reallyhave![:D] Better that than a snapped cambelt and all its costs though eh chaps [;)]

Interesting the catalogue I looked at doesn't mention a 1740 mm one at all! - must assume there is enough room on the adjustment.

probably is - GSF give it a number so it must exist. This probably explains why some belts never fit easily!
Incidentally the catalogue I was using was the Quinton Hazell one which is (along with others) available as a download.

[:(!] just looked in the Dayco catalogue which I downloaded after you mentioned the downloadable ones Jeremy (thanks for the idea! [;)]), the 6pk1740 is used on Berlingo hdi 2002 on ("Alt PAS+AC"), picasso hdi 2000 on ("Alt PAS+AC") and loads of 1.9t/tds etc. Doesnt mention the xsara or other hdi's, then if you check the 6pk1750's there you have all of the HDis (with "Alt PAS+AC"). .[V] Not having any knowledge in this area will this belt still fit in terms of length or will it be too tight a fit and cause damage or is there enough adjustment possible to cater for it being 1cm shorter?
Looks like I may be going back to GSF [:o)]

Before you go back to GSF have a look at the belt installation on the car and in particular the position of the adjuster. If the adjuster is in the middle or near the max of its adjustment you'll probably be alright. Remember the 1740/50 is the total length of the belt so if its well wrapped round the adjuster it will amount to 5mm of adjustment.
Whats is also interesting is that for hoses QH give Citroen numbers as well!
Must find the Dayco catalogue - then I can confuse myself totally.
