Xsara cooling fans

Unread post by jochem »

Hello everyone,
Thanks to this forum I've been able to sort out lots of small niggles on my Xsara.
Next question; I think the temperature sensor which gives a signal to the cooling fan to start up is busted - The red stop light comes on intermittently along with a little red light next to the temperature gauge (even though the gauge isn't anywhere near the red. After a while the light goes off & the fan is turning at full speed.
I also noticed that the fan doesn't turn when the engine is first started from cold, even if the aircon is on.
The red stop light doesn't come on when cruising on the motorway, except when I suddenly slow down.
Have I diagnosed the problem correctly, or could it be another problem?
Many thanks for any suggestions.

Check that you've got enough coolant in the system you may have to bleed the system fully.

Thanks - the coolant is full.
I'm not sure if I have diagnosed the problem properly, or even if I have identified the sensor properly! I think it's the one which plugs into the RH side of the engine and also operates the diesel preheating element. Is that right?

Also; both fans are working, so am I right in thinking that this means the Bitron unit is still working?

So i went to a citroen garage to put the car onto their computer; coolant temperature sensor they said. For them to fit it they wanted £170! So I fitted it myself.....straight forward operation....except the warning light is still coming on, even though the fans are working fine!
What is the problem. Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!
