Hello every one i need your help urgently. my car failed it's mot on emission yesterday and i need to know if a 2001 xsara catalytic converter would fit onto 1998 xsara? thank you

Before you rage out for a costly cat replacement - you should check just about anything else first.
I'd say there is a very fair chance it's NOT the cat on a '98 car.

For starters, you should check the Oxygen sensor

Check tha Lambda-sond first. With an analog voltmeter or oscilloscope you should see an voltage alternating between 0.2 and 0.8 volts between the signal cables of the lambda sond (usually pin 1 and 2 of the 4-pin connector) with the engine warm and running at about 2500 rpm. If the tension does not get over 0.6 volts, the lamda sond must be replaced.

i als noticed that the car does consum a lot fuel lately.

So it's a 99% chance that the lambda sond is the cause. An old lambda sond does not emit more than 0.6 volts max. Normally a tension of 0.6 volts means that there was not enough fuel injected so there's more fuel injected -> higher fuel consumption -> failing emission control.

let just say if its the cat that causing the problem, would a CAT off 2001 model fit onto 1998 model?
