1.9 Starting Problems (When Hot)

Unread post by sorrentogti »

Hey there. Had My Limited Edition 1990 1.9 GTi 205 for about 8 weeks... the guy who sold it to me had just replaced the starter motor, but the problem i've got is it starts fine on cold and 99% of the time fine when i take it 20 mins down the road but the problem i've got is if i stop at the petrol station after driving about a hour, i'll fill up try and start the car but it won't start... makes a clicking noise, i then try probably 40/50 times then if i leave it about a hour then go back to it, then it starts???
please help!!!

yep i had this problem
it was not enough voltage getting to the solenoid on the starter, to prove it run a wire from the battery to the solenoid and it will start ok, the problem is either in the loom or the key switch.
I fixed this by putting a new feed through a relay to the starter solenoid and having the old feed as the switching pulse for the relay. this has been in and working for 5 years now,
oh and yes i did try a new starter before i found this :o(

It's a classic problem on 205/309 GTis, has happened on a couple of cars of mine. I think it's down to age increasing the resistance of the wires to the starter solenoid. It is at its worst when you've just driven the car for a sustained period - I think heating the wires up again increases the resistance so you're less likely to get enough oomph to the solenoid. Remedy as per nicksuch's suggestion - don't waste money on a new starter!

Fitting a relay on the starter solenoid is fairly easy. I'd fit it for you... but you'll have to drive about 150-200 miles to get here! [:D]

you need that oh-so rare of things, a fuel station on a hill [:D]
with a full tank you should be able to make 200 miles surely?
