Quick update I have got the rear cambelt cover off and it looks dry.
The engine looks to have oil from just below the starter area, also just below/behind the injector pump. Are there any oil pipes/known leak points in these areas?
I dont want to think about a head gasket leak.
Thanks

sounds suspiciously like it's either the dipstick tube, or one of the rubber hoses that attatch to it. Possibly the sump gasket, but this is unlikely. The pipes from/to the dipstick tube assembly go rock hard with age and break up. to change them properly means starter off at the very least.

The breather pipe went on mine, where it goes into the bottom of the oil filler. The oil went everywhere after a while.Same as above, the pipe went hard & started to split. The pipe was only a fiver or so,but fiddley to change.Could be that.

Basil,
Hate to be the barginger of doom, but, does this look / sound familiar:

Just started one day no warning. Could only have been the headgasket, to leak that much in that location.
Hope this doesn't spoil your day too much!

surely there would be a noticeable difference in performance if it was coming from the head gasket, ie lack of cylinder compression? when i had oil around that locaition on my zx it was the engine breather pipegetting blocked, the pressure built up and when it released it forced the oil out into the engine bay!

Nope, no loss of performance, just the oil leak. The oil feed to the head is just there on that corner of the block, so it's possible for that part of the gasket to fail and leak oil to the outside without losing compression or getting gasses in the water. Mine was dripping every second or so even with the engine just at idle. Leaked about 1 litre of oil over 60 miles - not very socially responsible! I only discovered it because I spotted the wet patch under the car in the works car park.

Would not be too popular with the motorcyclists me thinks (speaking from an oily sliding round a roundabout experiance!)
I remember now about my friends rover engine, at 55k the head gasket went because of poor design, there was a couple of mm beteen the coolant ducting and the outside

I have cleaned the area behind the injector pump/cambelt ,started engine then saw oil coming out[:(][:(][:(].HG leak cofirmed[V]
I know cries of 'touch ye not oil of the serpent'will be mutterd but has anybody use K-seal/Seal up as a fix[?](Its a million to one chance but it might just work)[:I]
Thanks (Boo Hoo)

cant imagine that any sealant would work as you wouldn't be able to get the area clean enough to get it to stay, also would of thought the pressure would just blast it off

I had a leak myself on my Xantia TD, it turned out to be the rocker cover gasket was weeping and running down the engine. Easy to replace and not much money either.

The cylinderhead has warped because of hot spots - in turn caused by too low a flow in the cooling. This means at one end the head has a gap from the block which the headgasket can no longer fill out.
As the oilways are outermost - first symptom would be oil flowing out.
You should concentrate on the cause of the HG failure.
Most likely the radiator is clogged internally by sediments thus slowing down the coolant flow.
A HG replace work is the only cure. No leak stoppers can ever solve the problem - not even for a day.
