Xsara LX 19.TD Vs 205 GLD 1.8D

Post by maxfox44 »

I'm thinking of getting rid of my old 205D for a nice S reg Xsara TD.
Will I notice a difference in acceleration and/or MPG??
I would appreciate your comments..

205
+ Lighter
+ No Exhaust Gas Recirculation
+ Good power / weight ratio.
- No Turbo
Xara
+ Newer Car
+ More gizmo's
+ Turbo - good mid-range punch.
+ Exhaust Gas Recirculation - better emissions come MOT time !
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation - loose some power.
- Weight
- Economy because of the above.
I would say you'd still come out on top in terms of the performance of the Xara, but I don't think you'll get anywhere near the economy of the 205.
As a guide, I used to have a 306Td, I used to get 48 - 50mpg from that. I now have a Xantia ( same year ) Td, a heavier car, I'm lucky to get 44 out of that, and that's with a tailwind. Both have the same engine, no EGR etc..

Hi Max - My daughter has done just that. She's given up her 205GRD and bought a Xsara HDI. Having had a drive in it, I was very impressed with it. As Mbunting says - the 205 is a very simple car to work on whilst the Xsara is much more sophisticated with more things to go wrong. An S reg, of course will have the XUDturbo engine. I would have thought a slight increase in the fuel consumption but a vast increase in power output. Just a small word of warning - there have been several reported stories of conrods going through the sides of these engines. All of them have been confined to R and S regs years. Use the search in the archives. Also look at Honest John's archive on his site.
