Hello everyone
For a while now i have been having a problem with the brakes on 1.9TD xantia (95) When i drive it from cold and brake lightly i get alot of juddering from the front brakes (it gets quite bad and your whole body vibrates). If i brake hard there is no problem. Once everythings warmed up the juddering stops but i get a squealing insteadn when i lighly brake but again its ok if i brake hard . I have replaced the front pads and done about 400 miles on them. I cant see any obvious problem.
Can anyone suggest a reason, im really getting fed up with it now. I have just swapped the rear tyres with the front. Didnt make any difference except now the steering pulls to the left. Im thinking this may be because of the way the tyres have worn when they where on the back. Will this sort itself out after a while??

Andy,
There are several things that can cause this & it's really a case of systematic troubleshooting; we'll keep making suggestions & you one by one eliminate 'em.
This can be caused due to contamination on the rotors when new pads are fitted (grease or oil etc) or one that had me stumped on a non Cit vehicle and this was incorrect wheel allignment. In this case, I started by blaming the new tyres that were fitted just prior to the problem starting and they had a strange zig zaggy type of pattern & I was told the new tyres would bed in. They didn't. I was then told it was bushes in teh front end..almost $600 later & it was the same. Then it was supposedly run out in the rotors. Machined; no different. Rack in the steering was worn. Removed, checked all OK. Bearings in the steering box. Replaced. Ball joints..checked OK. Idler arm...removed fully shecked & replaced..no different. Loose sway bar.............this is ridiculous!! So I knocked the tie rod ends off & gave them a couple of twists each & bingo..no more wobble.
It was OK at every point of driving except when I pushed gentle on the brake pedal when pulling up at which point the wheel would go to & fro by up to two inches; it was that bad. When I had a full load on however, it was hardly noticeable.
May not be it, but I nearly went beserk trying to find it. If I drove it around town for 20 minutes, people would swear I had Parkinsons..it used to actually make me tremble and all the so called experts couldn't nail it.
May not be your problem but if the symptoms match, has to be worth a try.

Thanks for the comments guys. To update you. I have now been driving the car for 3 days since i moved back tyres to the front, and as yet havent had the juddering when i brake. The squeal is still there and i cant get rid of it. I put copper greece on the back of the old pads and the new ones, yet i still get it.
The new problem is that since moving the tyres around, the car now pulls to the left. ( i may have cured one problem only to get another) I think i will have to get wheel alignment checked. There was something wrong with the original front tyre, coz when i went to get it balanced, the guy had great difficulty in doing it. I had the tyre rebalanced 2 weeks later as well, and still a prob. I think this may have been causing the brake juddering. Since i moved that tyre to the back the ride has been much smoother and no juddering. Am i right in getting the wheel alignment checked?? or should i wait and see if the tyre beds in?
