Noise coming from Power Steering

My ZX 1.9 TD 1994 is begin to make strange noises and I think its the power steering, its intermittent but when it happens it will continue for some time. The best way I can describe it is that of a domestic water system water hammer sound. A strong hum that gets louder and then quietens down. If I waggle the steering it tends to get a little quiter but still persists with a hum.
Any ideas?

Try adjusting your steering pump drive belt, you will probably find that it's slipping

A fluid change probably won't hurt either. Check the belt first though, sounds like it's glazed and needs changing.
