Zx problem

Post by Bodger »

Hi
{posted earlier about a clunk over bumps. I had to get a tyre done and the kwik fit tyre jockey said the steering bush had gone and it is held on by the bolt. He advised me against driving it as the steering would probably collapse.
I have been quoted to replace it. I also need the timing belt done.
Are these jobs simple enough for me to attempt?
I managed to replace the alternator last year but it was a bit of a struggle.
I am thinking of selling it as it seems to be one thing after another!
BTW, replacing antifreeze as posted earlier by someone else is this a simple job or should I just top the radiator?
Thanks

Steering bush?? Do you mean Track rod end or wish bone bushes or bottom ball joint or drop link balljoints or anti-roll bar bushes. Can't say I've ever heard of a steering bush, all sounds a little bovine manure to me. Either that or the S?£t Fit Fitter, has no facility for the use of enginnering terminology in his vocabulary. Why would the steering collapse, is it made of paper? Chances are the over use of scaremongering to force a sale has occurred here.<img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle> Go to several independant garages and ask them to have a look. They'll normally do it for free and you may have two or three of them come up with the same diagnosis.

Is this the same fitter that told me after a free brake check that it would cost £352 to fit new disks and pads to the front of my BX. That "included" free fitting. Did it need doing straight away "yes, your car is dangerous at the moment, sir". Went and bought new pads and disks myself and fitted them for about £50. When I showed the "dangerous" ones to a mate who is a mechanic he said the pads had a "few thousand miles" left on them and the disks would have lasted for anothr MOT at least. Needless to say, I have never been back to the fsat fit place. Get another opinion!!
