I Think i broke my airbag :-(

Post by thedadio »

Hello, I followed the haynes manual instruction on how to deactivate airbag system, although i diconnected both terminals on the battery (is this okay?),so i could replace front seats. Unfortunatley i did not follow he correct activation procedure and now have a flashing airbag light. I just conected the battery back up and started it and the bag light keeps flashing, is it broken?
Ive just diconnected the battery again and ill leave it for 10 minutes and try following the procedure.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

hi, if you have taken the seat out ensure that the connections under the seat are ok as this seems a common problem with pugs that i have had

More likely it is warning you of a problem with the seatbelt pretensioners if you have not actually disconnected the airbag.

Is there any way of transferring the old pretesioners to the new seats?

Hi
First thing is, If the airbag light is flashing or on then the whole SRS system is disabled & WONT fire if you have an accident.
What are you trying to do here & also what car is it on?
You said you are replacing front seats?
Do the replacement seat have pretensioners fitted that are ok?
You can swop pretensioners between seats they are only bolted on, Use thread lock on the bolt & dont lose the wavy washer under the bolt head.
But if the seat you are swopping them to never had pretensioners fitted then you need to swop the half C bracket over as well (Just riveted on)
If you have fitted after-market bucket seats & harnesses then you need to get the dummy plugs to fool the SRS control box so it thinks the pretensioners are still there.
Can we have some more information please?

hello, the new seats are from a phase 2 dturbo going into phase 1. As far as im aware the pre tensioners are okay, they seem physically okay. i might try changing the pretensioners around. any way to check if the new ones are okay?

Hi
You cant really check a pretensioner to see if its ok, They either are ok, dead or fired, Are the phase 2 pretensioners about 4 inches shorter in height then the originals fitted to your car?
What ever you do, DONT try & use a electrical test multi meter on them! If you connect a test meter to a LIVE pretensioner it will FIRE!
The pretensioners from the phase 2 might be diffrent inside then the phase one pretenioners, There was a few different kinds of pretensioner fitted to the 306 according to the part cd rom.
Just swop them over, Its only a 17mm bolt that holds them on & they tuck into the C shapped bracket on the seat frame, Also dont lose the wavey washer under the bolt head.
