xantia cambelt

Post by stevieO »

Can anyone advise the best time to get a cambelt done on a 1.9td xantia. Mine has now done near 151K. It was last done at 107k. Also any idea as to likely cost.
Many thanks

Best practice is to change it at 40K. With your mileage it might be advisable to change the water pump and tensioner.

When I last queried this one with the local garage they said about every 60 to 70K. Mine was done first at 60k, I then had it done on I think about 110K. The guy who took the second belt off said that it was still good, but at least I have peace of mind. I reckon you're safe for another 15K or so, probably more, but you never know ....

I'd be thinking about getting it done in the very near future. As JohnD says, think about the water pump, belt tensioner and the belt idler. Price, look at 4 to 5 hours labour, a belt is about £9, tensioner kit is about £35 and a pump is about £16. These are all GSF prices and don't include VAT. Your garage may want to charge you more for the parts, but at least it gives you an idea.

I did mine at 125k and the belt looked good. It was first replaced at the big 72k service.
Replacing the belt, tensioner and idler and the waterpump and crankshaft seal took me a morning. Unfortunately it took a further half a day to get the cam covers off and another half day to get them back on again. Are there any quick ways to do the cam covers (newer bolt on type)? and to get the front on without breaking it?

Turn it inside out and bend it with the teeth to the outside. Often on a belt that looks good, cracks will show at the base of the teeth.
