When they brought out the original Xantia 16v, 2 litre, it was rated at 155Bhp. My 97 model has the downrated 135 bhp engine. Anyone know what they did to downrate them and why?. Is it a chip thing. I don`t want to go faster, just have a bit more wellie when caravan (shoebox) is dangling from back of car.

Actually, early Xantias were fitted with the 2.0 16v engine used in the ZX 16v and later 405 Mi16's. It was the only 16v engine available in it at the time. Later a 1.8 16v version was added and the 2.0 8v Turbo CT. No Xantia 16v's had a turbo.
I don't remember seeing a 135bhp 2.0 16v, but agreed that is weak performance! Couldn't tell you the difference I'm afraid.

When the Xantia was released it was available with the following petrol engines; 2.0 16v 155 bhp, the 2.0 8v 123bhp and 1.8v 8v 103 bhp.
In 1995 the 16v version was discontinuted and replaced with the 2.0 16v 135 bhp, also announced at the same time was the 1.8 16v 112 bhp. I believe the earlier 16v engine had a different cylinder head construction.
Just to confuse matters the older 8v versions of both engines were stil available in either low spec models or those fitted with auto gearboxes.
The 2.0 8v 150bhp Turbo CT (Constant torque) engine became available in 1995 when the Activa and then the Turbo CT VSX estate were announced.

Yes, Richard is quite right. The early 155BHP engine was known as an XU10J4, and is basically a slightly larger version of the BX 16v lump, and has a 134 toothed timing belt. XU10J4 was only fitted to the Xantia from launch until 7/95 when it was replaced by the 135BHP XU10J4R. This has a completely different head arrangement, and a 136 toothed timing belt. Thats what the Xantia driver was then stuck with unless he wanted the 8 valve 2.0 litre Turbo instead, which I think that Citroen wanted to market as the performance version.
Infact, the XU10J4R is probably detuned in its Xantia application, as the engine can make a lot more power, in its last incarnation as the 167BHP XU10J4RS.(Xsara VTS)
