Xantia TD strange engine problem

My engine has started chugging, it normally happens at lower engine speeds in a higher gear. You can stop by taking your foot of the throttle and then reappling it. It is as if the engine is oscillating. Any ideas[?]
I wonder about engine mounts or timing belt slack. Anybody else experienced it. It has always done it a little bit but it does seam to be getting worse.

Lower engine mounting a bit soft? mines worse after a while in stop start traffic, maybe the heat.

check that the rubber fuel pipes arent perished/cracked and sucking in air!
