Have a 1996 306 1.9TD Spinnaker with 78,000 miles. Rear suspension started to groan and I have pinpointed that to the rear right joint where the trailing arm comes out of the axle bar. Will have to get that seen to...
But there is another noise, sounds like the rear left - it is a rapid knocking when going over uneven surface - seems to be more pronounced when braking and I noticed yesterday it was LESS noticable when driving with a full load in the boot. So when braking ie less weight on the rear wheels it is worse, and when laden with more weight on it nearly goes away.
Can it be the shock absorbers then? - the car bounces fine so they are damping okay - could it be the lower shock mounts or something. Tried twisting them - a bit of movement but seem reasonably firm - but I was doing this when she was up on ramps - so they had the weight of the car on them.
If it is the shock mounts is it worth just changing them or should I just fork out for the complete shock absorber (both rears of course).
Any advice much appreciated.

Easy, its the rubber mountings where the axle joins the chassis. Mine went with these symptoms. Jack the car up so that the weight of the axle is hanging from the car, e.g jack the car from the chassis not the axle. If its the rear mounts that have gone, they will pull apart from the weight of the axle. If not, its the more expensive front passive steer mounts.
