Xantia 2.0i knocking
I have seen on the net people saying if its a 2.0i 8v Xantia or XM and there is knocking noise from the engine then stay away. Why is this? They all say not to get the car but fail to say why. Cause my 2.0i Xantia has like a knocking rumble noise come from the engine when going over bumpy road... just getting worried.......

Knocking from the engine usually means big expensive troubles e.g. worn big end or little end bearings. Rattly engines are usually past their best.
Knocking from the suspension going over bumps on a Xantia is usually a sign of worn anti-roll drop links, rather cheaper to fix (1/2 hour labour plus £20 in parts each).

From HonestJohn's Car-by-car breakdown:
"Listen for knocking from engines of 2.0 litre models (both 8v and 16v) due to design of piston skirts. If fault developed early, pistons were replaced FOC, but only when knocking became excessive. "
If yours is only knocking on the move then it's probably roll bar links as Kowalski said.

Richard's quote sounds like good old fashioned piston slap which usually happens when an engine is cold. As the pistons warm it often goes away.
Sounds like droplinks on your car. Engine knocks usually happen under certain conditions - eg medium revs - heavy load and are repeatable. Rather different to a chatter from the front suspension which happens over numps only.
