Replacing AX clutch cable

I'm trying to replace the clutch cable on an 1989 Citroen AX, and its a total nightmare!
I've got the old one off so far and am trying in vain to get the pedal end to hook into place, as Haynes says 'access is very poor'.
Anyone got any tips?
