RP Number +stuff

Post by jameshughes »

Hello
I have a 1998 s2 1.8 16v estate.
Does anybody know where the RP number is on this model as I cant find it?
My aircon has packed in 5 months after the garage give it a full pressure test and service(one of the only things I have been to a garage for in the last 10 years). Does anybody know of common aircon failure points on this car?
Has anybody tried the R134a refrigerent packs available on ebay?
I havent tried dismantling any pipes on it yet- surely all the joins use rubber o rings - or is aircon special(the service price certainly was!)
Thanks

dont try and products claiming to fix air con, there product is a mixture of synthetic oils,it will totally screw up your air con system.what diagnosis did the garage tell you?.did they use any ultra violet dye in the system?.in the garage where i work we use a leak detector or use nitrogen to find leaks.a couple of faults on 406 are leaking condensor or pipes to condensor leaking at there joints.
i would recommend leaving the air con to a specialist to sort.disturbing the pipes etc might cause problems ie:moisture in system, will cause premature damage to system.email me at TONESPEED1999@MSN.COM if you need further advise.[:)]

Thanks, I will dig out the bill and see exactly what they did.I dont mind paying for specilist work but somehow I think i have paid for an expensive regass with no real fault finding taking place.I have a feeling the garage is going to say we regassed it 4 months ago. My argument is that a leak test should have found something as the aircon has steadily lost performance upto the point of the low pressure switch has now stopped the compresser kicking in.
i definitly paid for a leak test though. Time will tell

Are you trying to use it to demist the windows? What was the outside temp when you found out it wasn`t working? As below about 5 or 4 oC,its to cold to work. The out side temp needs to be +5 or so to work.

thats a good point i wasnt aware of - it has been around the freezing level when i have tried to use the aircon- because I do use it for demisting the window. When the UK warms up in about 3 months or so I will try it again haha! Its definitly less effective than when it was initialy regassed thought.

Theres a fair bit on it in the air con section. In December i drove to London,rain/sleet/snow most of way.I put the air con on to demist the windows, but nothing happend.Couldn`t feel the pump kicking in.I have a exterior temp gauge on my car. When it went to 5 oC,i felt the pump kick in,then the windows demisted. But as soon as it droped to 4 oC,it stopped again. It did that the whole journey.
Yesterday it was sunny & 12 oC here in Bristol. It worked fine.
