Valves adjustment on bx??

If my valves are noisy, is there a way to open the head and adjust them or should i not bother?

Most BX engines have direct acting valves (not 1.4 or 16V models), and the only way to adjust them is to take the camshaft out and change the shims underneath. time consuming and fiddly, so only recommended if they're very noisy or you've got other running problems.

Take the rocker cover off measure clearances and replace shims as required.
Have you tried an oil change? I've often heard of newer oil quieting noisy valves, usually the valves are noisy because the oil is well past its sell by date.

I have replaced the oil not too long ago and the valves are still noisy, i heard that 10w-40 oil might be good for the valves but also that if the car is over 150,000 miles then it might need adjustment.
Will i need to take the camshaft off or not? Is there a way to do it without taking it off?
If i do open it, is there any other parts/ sealers that i will have to replace after adjusting the clearances?

Hi Elad -
This is a camshaft out job. No shortcuts possible.
That's why you leave it as is, because it is indeed a small nightmare of a job.
Try get a 15W-50 or 20W-50 standard mineral oil. Personally I prefer Duckham's.
A 10W-40 oil really is a bit too thin for your climate to run the BX.

Thanks, i think i am going to use your advice (again) and leave it as is, taking the camshaft out is not a fun job as playing with the hidraulics..

My Rover had some treatment stuff put in to keep the top end quiet. It certainly isn't noisy but then I hadn't noticed it being particularly bad before! Is this just one of those unecessary extra's or do these additives actually work?!
