Best way to get a clock in a 205?

Post by Dan205 »

Hi guys,
My 205 is a very basic one and as such doesnt have a clock! Neither on the almost featureless instrument panel or on the dashboard next to the cigarette lighter where they usually are. As such its quite difficult for me to tell the time! I bought a stick on clock but it only lights up when you press a button so I could do with something a bit more proper-
Now some 205s had a power connector behind the clock fascia which could power a 205 digital clock, unfortunately even this simple wire was not included on some of the cheaper models. I'd need some way to power the clock when the car is "off" and also to power the clock illuminator when it comes on, so I cant just take a supply off the cigarette lighter power.
I have sourced a digital clock and clock surround from a scrap yard but without any way to power it i'm stuck!
Any ideas?

Hi
Use the 12 volt permanent memory feed & illumination feed from the radio, Theres also a earth on the radio conector plug too.

Right... you're going to have to explain a couple of things to me :)
When you say memory and illumination feeds - I assume the radio has memory power to preserve the user preferences, but illumnation? Doesnt the radio get this from the normal power source?
And where does the earth come into it?
Would I be right in thinking theres power on the radio plug for both powering the clock when the car is off and lighting it up when its on? :)
And how best to actually take power from the radio plug? Should i just remove a bit of the sheath from the appropriate wire and solder another wire onto it, or is there a more professional method?
Thanks for any help!

Hi
There should be a permanent 12 volt supply to the radio to preserve the radios memory.
You can also use the switched live on the back of the radio to make the clock light up when the key is turned on.
You will also need an earth to complete the circuit for the clock to work.
12 volts goes in the positive wire, Through the clock & then back to earth to make a circuit, Without the earth the clock wont work, There will be an earth on the back of the radio to use.
The whole metal bodyshell of the car is earthed, The battery negative wire is connected to the bodyshell.
What wires does your clock have on the back of it?
You could remove a bit of sheath & solder a wire on, But you MUST make sure you insulate the connections afterwards with tape! There must be NO bare wire showing!
Personally & I know that not everybody likes them, I would use some scothlocks, Much easier.
I hope thats explained it a bit clearer for you.
Any more problems or you get stuck just ask again.

Yeah I got some scotchlocks.
Miraculously the 205 manual does include details of what each pin on the radio plug does! 3 of the connections listed are "Battery positive (permanent)", "Ignition positive" and "Radio illumation" - I presume I should use the radio illumination feed for the clock bulb and the battery positive for the clock to keep it going, and just leave the ignition positive?
To "complete" the circuit I was going to connect it to a negative wire on the radio plug, is that not the way I should do it or should I connect it to a metal item as you say?
Cheers,
Dan

Hi
I would use the Battery Positive for the clocks memory.
Then the Ignition Positive to make the clock light up when the ignition is switched on
You can use the earth wire from the back of the radio.
Connected up like that, You should then have a working clock.

Well, you were right.
The radio illumination positive is connected to the headlight controls and thus, pretty useless unless you have your lights on.
The ignition positive comes on with the key in ignition and accessories mode, which is ideal.
Here's the fruit of my labours...

Cheers dude! (Note added cigarette lighter, they really cut costs on this model didnt they!)

Hi all
I'm trying to put the same sort of clock into my 205 - can you tell me which of the terminals on the back of the clock goes to earth - I've got as far as working out that the top out of the four terminals is blank but can't decide which of the other three is the earth?
Thanks for any help.
