too much diesel, excessive fuel consumption

hiyas guys, having a bit of a problem with my Xantia at mo, can you help....
basicaly i am using about £20 of diz for bout 160miles, ummmm huh!!!
It puzzles me as there is no sign of a problem, IE no smoke, no knocking, no chugging, although it does seem a bit under powered but that may just be me as I was driving a Rover 1.8td before which was very powerful on acceleration. I have tried to figure it out and thought it may have been a clogged air filter so ive run it without a filter for 200 miles to test and no difference.
It is a 94 Mreg 1.9td 56k
realy need some help on this one, as i use to put bout half the amount in my BX TD and its bustin me.
If it worth knowing then its a bugger to start, it warms the plugs and still takes bout 8-12 turns to start (unlesss i just turned it off), also it ticks over at bout 1000rpm where as my non td does bout 850, there seems to less power than my td in the lower revs than my non td but i dunno if thats because the TD uses lower revs.
Any help would be gratefully accepted, im gonna some injector cleaner today to see if that helps, but any other advice would be great, Thanks.

That's 30mpg, which is inbdeed poor, what sort of driving was it over though?
Poor starting can be glowplugs or air in the fuel (split in the priming bulb is a common one).
The TD does seem gutless below 2000rpm I find, its simply not fast enough to get the turbo boosting.
How's the tyre pressures, and have you checked for binding brakes?

Check carefully for leakage in the fuel hoses. Even an almost invisible pinhole can do alarming things to fuel consumption, and air ingress could well account for the difficult starting. Worth checking the injector leakoff hoses too, as these commonly harden and split at the ends.

Worth having a look at the tank - had a vent hose right on top go on our ZX 1.9D when we bought it. Fun to fix - didn't remove tank.
You say its slow. How old is the car, do you know what make of injection pump its fitted with? Does it smoke?

Change the fuel filter if in any doubt. Replace the oil and filter. It makes a big difference on this engine, for some reason. The Xant is heavier by far than your old BXTD although you have rose coloured specs on if you reckon it ever did 60 MPG. If you could drive it slowly enough to get 60 mpg, the fuel would evaporate before you did!
45-50 tops for a BXTD. Doing the math at 83p/litre, 20 litres =16.60 so you get 24 litres and do 160 miles 20 miles on 3 litres or 30 MPG. 10/10 for Jeremy on the maths but this is winter so cars warm up more slowly and spend more time with lights and wipers on. Bad weather can make a 10% difference and Xantias average about 38. Time to check the thermostat, any cold start enrichment device and Try the effect of giving the engine a good thrash to clear out the exhaust if you have just changed the air filter.

My BX TZD Turbo consistently gives around 50 mpg. The last tankful did 55 mpg as alot of it was driving at 60 - 70 mph.

i had a similar problem with a sierra 1.8td, i took it to a specialist and he re-timed it saying it was miles out so was not combusting properly, hence poor power, poor fuel economie and starting problems.
I took my sierra because it was getting poor mpg and gutless, when i got it back it was much louder (sounded more diesely) but he said this is how they sound when they combust correctly. before it was relly quiet.....does you sound like this???

Thanks guy for your replies, firstly i must say that i did give a bit of an exageration to ephasise the fact that xan is doin poo mpg against my BX but i was i getting bout 45-55 mpg (dependingif i was in a hurry)
will check the above but still having problems, please could you explain some of what has bee said as im not technicly minded , thanks guys
