XM oil /water level

Post by William »

My XM 2.1i is currently flashing its oil and water warning lights at tickover (when warm). The coolant level light has been dodgy since I bought it (coming on and off when it felt like it)but I've always had a problem getting an accurate oil reading. The meter on the dash tells me I have plenty of oil but the dipstick is so smeared it doesn't give me a proper reading. I'm worried about over/under filling with oil.

Is the dip stick twisted through 180 degrees at the bottom, just above the level markings? If not, your car has missed one of the basic "mods" performed by Citroën. Grip the dipstick betwen two adjustable spanners a couple of inches above the level markings and twist the flat metal through 180 degrees. This will stop the dipstick from picking up oil from the sides of the dip stick tube and give you a better reading. The Oil level meter on the dashboard can be unreliable - don't always believe what it says - check with the dispstick occasionally.
