Best cars of all time

Post by yangreen »

Channel 4 are adopting the "Top 100" banner for cars. Sadly, the BX didn't make it but the 2cv, DS and SM are in the list!
Go pick your top 10!

It's a strange list for sure! Toyota Landcruiser but only the current one! Porsche 911 but not the original classic. Vauxhall Calibra? The "essex-girl" of the car world. Just a doll'd up Cavalier!

Think I chose: Cit DS, 2CV, SM, SAAB 92, RANGE ROVER, ALFASUD, SMART FORTWO, NSU RO80, Cit Traction Avant + Lotus Elan Sprint. Why Maxi but no Renault 16? Alfasud but no GS? Why no supermini pioneers like Fiat 127 and Renault 5?

There are certainly some odd choices in there-Smart fortwo, the clio williams???!!Here's my 10 strictly from the list, in no particular order-with reasons & excuses! Shame there's no Austin Princess but we can't have everything.
The Maxi-grossly underrated, would have been a top classic with a double chevron on it,super ride, loads of space!
The Bristol Blenheim-eccentrics express, I could see Setright driving one.
The 68' Charger- Dukes of Hazzard, of course!!
The Lancia Stratos- bring back group B[:)]
The Hummer-get out of my way[}:)]
The Model T-indestructible, and with upside down back to front controls.
The Viper-noise,more noise,doughnuts,smoke,grunt.
The Zonda-saw that on top gear, in the tunnel, incredible.
The original Mini-loads of fun to drive.
The 205 GTI-I wanted one but could only insure an XS.

See the Lamborgini LM is on their list... read about it, liked the pictures, but never saw one for real .... but it sounded pretty damn good (or brought out my worst, as some might say!) .... anyone here get to try one?

BMW M3, try it...........The best driving experience, easy to see that it was designed firstly as a racing car, secondly to sell to people with money. Owned the BMW press fleet car.
Cobra, sexy beast. Could only afford to own/build a replica, still it did have a 5.3 V12 lump with a manual gearbox, goodbye 911 Turbo/Cosworth.
Golf GTI very special in 1978, I was selling MK2 Escorts when it came along, Oh dear Henry.
Alfasud, great fun cars with an excellent engine and ride quality, pity about the rest. Owned a 1286Ti and 1490Ti and enjoyed them both.
DS + RO 80, very different and interesting, would have both if I had the space/money.

They say "don't drive your dream cars as it will only disappoint you." I drove a Viper and while you can't argue with the speed of the thing, it feels like the whole thing used to be a truck, not just the engine!
The wind noise was a bit much at 130mph too!

Landy series 1? Sorry but a 4x4 2cv is a much more fun way to go off roading! Louis Barbour does a complete rolling chassis and it is frightening how capable they are. I need to save a little more to afford one yet though...
