Xantia's and Fuel

Is it OK to use these Shell Optimax and BP Ultimate things?
I used Shell Optimax in my 2.0i Xantia and a few weeks later the engine went up in smoke, so i am very scared to do it again.

Personaly I'd not touch the shell stuff again. After a fiver in my Xsara I ended up changing the idel speed motor and cleaning out he MAP sensor and the engine ran as rough as a robbers dog took two complete fill ups with Sainsburys petrol befor back to normal.

I have been warned by a couple of guys involved in car racing not to put Optimax in the car if it looks like taking a long time to use it. (ie) If the car is to be laid up or if it's a car that doesn't get used much as they reckon it does "strange things" if left get a bit old in the tank. Something to do with the additives they put in it they reckon.
