I've just bought a 98 Xsara and when the heater is on full blast it's really noisy. is this normal? the motor seems to be behind the glove box, and I'm wondering if there's some soundproofing missing.

Mine's noisy too! I think it's just a characteristic of the car.[:(]

hamer, this is normal. The blower is behind the glove box and easily gotten to. look under the glove box up behind it and you'll see the motor. Held in by just 3 screws. There's a bit of trim in the way but it's only half an hour to remove and replace. Speed 1 is very slow, 2 is about normal in any other car, 3 is louder and 4 is just for very, very bad weather days to de mist the front screen. I've had mine out gave it a clean 'n' lube but no difference.
