105 C .... Not usual ??? or is it ????

Post by jjandrj6679 »

Hi all. Ever since I got this car the guage has two temperature settings, one for driving > 90'C, and one for idle > 105'C ????? Now this is not normal is it. 105'C is when the fan kicks in too
It does have Air con and its a 1999 406 16v 1761cc Petrol.
I did read some where that the a Coolant temp sensor is cuts out at 101'C ????
Love to know if its my guage or my car and life ar just about to go up the swanny.
Yours

Hi Josh
I have a 96 406 1.9TD so it may be different. With climate control on or aircon it never strays above 70 deg at idle or driving. With climate/aircon off drives at about 85 deg and will go to 90 deg in heavy traffic. This may be of no help but may draw in more info for both of us.

You on about 2 needles (pionters) on the same guage? if so one may be oil temp. Saying that my old Reno fuego had 2 guages. One for idel and one for running.

Hi Stuart
What I am describing and am sure it goes for Josh as well there is one needle on gauge. When driving it is registering one temp but registers a different temp at idle. Therefore the engine is running cooler whilst driving and hotter whilst idling.
Hope this clarifies

Remember while the car is sitting still idling there is no airflow through the radiator so the temperature will be higher on the gauge.
Click the link, Then on "ELECTRICAL" at the top, Then click on "306 COOLING FANS, BASIC PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION" in the list on the left hand side.
I know it says 306, But the 406 & nearly all other PSA cars from the last 10 - 15 years use this set up

As fo the temp thing, so my car is supposed to run at 105'C because its got Air con ((Basic type) Heater controls are 2 knobs and a speed slider).
It seems realy high, also if its 2 speed fan why cant I see/hear/feel the other stage of the fan kick in????
Josh
P.S. To those that answered and felt that I didnt know what a Temp guage is, Thanks for the advice...lol..

Hi
The cars temp gauge should run around 90 when driving along.
When sitting still & idling the temp will rise a bit & the fans ( Theres TWO of them! ) should kick in.
The fans ( Both of them ) will also run at low speed when the aircon is switched on.
You might have a dodgy fan relay or fan motor.
The fans have low speed & high speed, But they always run as a PAIR!

Sounds like the thermostat may need changing. It shouldn't realy go up and down like that. Not expaensive to replace. See on line store for parts.
