activa turbo

is there a simple way to check that the turbo on my activa is functioning ok as this is the first turbo car I have owned I would like to make sure that it is ok and functioning as it should as the car doesnt feel as rapid as I expected.

I dont wont to pee on your chips, But I have a mate whos a Peugeot technician at a Peugeot dealership & he has replaced no end of turbos on this same 2 litre 8 valve engine as fitted to the 406s.
He has done 5 in the last 3 years, But he is only one of many technicians working there.

Doesnt matter if he is called a mechanic or technician, He has to work on the wonderful multiplexed Peugeots at the end of the day! lol

ok lets approach this from a different angle how the hell do I install a boost gauge to the activa is this easy or not? or more specifically anybody in the midlands want to help me fit it for the small return of a crate of beer?

A boost gauge should be easy, you will just need to tap into the inlet system plumbing anywhere after the turbo, the TD motors have a nice little pipe that you can put a tee piece into, there must be somewhere on your motor that can be drilled and tapped or teed into, then its just a question of leading the instrument line into the interior and connecting the gauge. a bit of 12 volts for illumination and bob is yer uncle.

sounds easy to me although it probably isnt. Although dumb as it may sound when i bought the car I had a mechanically minded friend give the engine a once over so I dont know where the turbo is anybody here point me in the right direction please.

One of the best places to tap into is the feed to the fuel pressure regulator. A boost gauge will normally come with a t-piece which will fit into this pipe. Other end to boost gauge.

A few mates had ren 5 turbo's in my younger days plus a Capri 2.8 twin turbo, turbo technics conversion (jesus mother of christ was it scary)
After worrying about the same sort of thing, turbo technics (very well respected firm) technician said as a rule of thumb if it doesn't puff white smoke or use a lot of oil your generally OK.
Had a 2.0 litre turbo activa for a couple of days use last year and it's not really a neck snapping car but nice and tourqey[:D]

The turbo is probably fine, they just aren't all that fast really.
The boost comes in really low (between 1500 and 2000 rpm) from 2000 it should be giving you a good pull but no sportscar acceleration. Over 5000 all the urge goes pretty quick.
I imagine if the turbo wasn't working it would perform like a N/A 8valve. Which has no go at all below 4000 rpm.

I have a N/A 2 litre 8 valve 405 & that pulls fine from 2500 RPM, It has plenty of go.

With a low-blow turbo (as the Activa is - in relative terms!), you don't feel that "kick" as it comes in; back in the days of Renault 5's, Saabs, etc, there was a definate boost point; modern low blow turbos are on boost by the time you think they should be blowing. Don't forget that most modern 2 litre 16v'ers will make 150bhp without a turbo; its used on the Activa to give some more bottom end grunt (more than you'll get from a 16V lump).
Don't know about the boost levels on these, but if it was more than 5-6psi (0.4bar-ish) as standard, I'd be surprised. There may, however, be the capacity to go higher... :)

Added to that, if an activa is working properly (and there has to be one somewhere:-)) then it doesn't feel fast even though it may be going at a fair clip.

By comparison, a 2CV feels like its doing 175mph everywhere!

cheers for all the help I know about not feeling that fast but when you look at the clocks and your doing 80 in 3rd then wooohhhhhhhhhh **** me. (must remember to turn the stereo down so I canm hear the engine and avid the 80 in 3rd thing happening ever again.
