Xantia 1.9TD starting difficulties

Post by Huwbruin »

Hello
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
My 98 Xantia TD has suddenly become difficult to start.
It will turn over fine and catch on all cylinders then immediately cut out.[:(]
It will then turn over without starting but will eventually catch and run as if I had tried to start it without letting the glowplugs do their job.
This started a couple of weeks ago, out of the blue ( before this there was absolutely no hint of a problem - it started first go and ran immediately on all four cylinders).
This makes me think it is not the glowplugs themselves.
Any ideas?

Try squeezing the fuel primer bulb until it gets firm before attempting to start it, if it improves it then you have an air leak somewhere, other thing to try are operating the glow plug circuit twice, if this improves it then it might be glow plugs, while you are under there try draining any water out of the fuel filter.

Firing for a few strokes then cutting out is deffinately caused by air in the pump, check the leak off pipes and end cap for cracks, check also the return pipe and supply pipe for leaky joints.
