is starting to get noisy but I haven't had a look yet to see where it's going. It's a 1.9td 1998, I assume it'll have a cat so that means £547 for complete system from National. GSF works out at £270 !
so looks like a diy job or maybe pay a local garage to fit it.
I notice a part N21554 Catalyst Repair Pipe for £14.75, does this replace the cat ? that would then make it £130 cheaper......
Anyone seen this part ?
Any gotchas replacing exhaust as a diy job ?

My '97 Xantia had a catalyst until the exhaust needed replacing, then it got an exhaust without a catalyst (£30 + vat approx), fitting was free because I did it. The back box can be got for similar money.
The catalyst isn't really needed for the MOT and isn't that beneficial, I got roughly a 5mpg improvement after my de-cat, but I suspect my cat was partially blocked.

I too replaced the complete system with a fairly new one from a dead xantia (of an earlier year - without a cat). I got the impression that the engine became more lively afterwards - probably to do with the lack of back pressure from the cat. I did look and speculate that it would be possible to buy a front pipe only and cut the cat out of the exhaust - but that would require some slighly larger pipe to allow a half decent joint to be made. Job fairly easy once you've removed the fibre panel from under the engine (splash guard??). Was surprised at how heavy back box was - especially when lying flat on your back trying to hang it on those moumting hooks. That obviously where the 'fit' part of the 'kwikfit' comes from.

Mine went last night(see Typical).Luckly its just the back box, where the center pipe connects.I have no cat on mine, local fast fit,£105 for the back box(yes, its bloody huge!),£75 for the center, turbo to backbox.I`ve fitted a few exhausts before at home,NEVER AGAIN!.So for £105,the garage can do it.
Jack dempsey,i`ve found mine more responsive too,as theres a lack of pressure.Less smoke as well,so the backbox must be pretty clogged up.

A quick look at the Bosal catalogue shows 1.9TD from 07/93- to be just the front pipe and rear box, no cat.
The Timax catalogue shows both cat and non cat. Cat systems have front pipe inclusive of cat, middle pipe and rear box. Both systems were running 93-97, then from 97-01 cat only on the XUD9SD. HDi have a different cat than XUD, but the middle pipe and rear box are the same.

Surely it cant be that hard if its the back box(he says in hope), Ive not got round to doing the back box on my xsara yet- its gone around the weld and I just used some of that repair putty as a temp measure (I think I must have left it like this for 2months now though[:D] ). Gotta do it soon or it'll fall off!
Cheers

Thanks so far, can anyone from GSF tell me what this part consists of
part N21554 Catalyst Repair Pipe for £14.75
I've had a look now and it has gone where the pipe enters the front of the cat, the cat, centre pipe and rear box all look good , do you reckon a small garage could weld the pipe up or something ? The pipe comes down from the turbo and then bends through about 60deg into the cat, the lower half of this joint has corroded away.
