auxillary belt squeal

Post by dan.2cv »

The aux drivebelt in my car has started squeaking when the car is idling and in 'D' (it's an auto) in neutral it's silent and makes no noise whilst driving (that I can hear anyway). Had a poke around this morning and the belt deflection is about 3cm. If i push harder I can feel it going further under spring pressure which I presume is normal for an automatic tensioner.
My question is this: Is it likely the tensioner is weak or on it's way out? I believe the belt was changed around 15-20,000 miles ago and should last a bit longer than that (it shows no signs of deterioration).
thanks guys

I had this with a TD Xantia. Putting on a new belt didn't stop it, in the end swopping the crankshaft pulley stopped it. It was no longer gripping the belt. (£75 from Citroen, Breakers visit was somewhat cheaper)

I dump a lot of talcum powder on the belt when they do that, it cleans crud off and if it does not improve the squeal then at least it makes them smell nice;)
