BX TD braided hoses

Post by Jon »

Don't suppose anyones got any new old stock ones lying about?
We're going to do the h/gasket on the BX next week, and as these hoses are bloody impossible to replace in situ. So I thought I'd order a set of three, until I found out the prices from Mr Citroen:
96151971 £72.15 & vat
96017618 £40.80 & vat
96162226 £35.19 & vat
Thats more then the car cost! [:(!] Have not ordered them. Have tried usual sources, plus of course Ebay without luck.

Jon,
Must be available from somewhere, as I had the short one changed on my BX, and the hose only cost £11. Pity the labour came to £150! Dunno where the guy sourced them from though.

Jon
The last set I fitted were £127. -- 4 - 5 years ago.
Have a look at ARP Avonmouth, they manufacture furnace door cooling hoses in straight lengths, Might be able to adapt. Sprayed with black heat resistant paint ??
Also I believe the steel braiding is available from competition engine/hose suppliers.
Price ??

Demon tweeks do some similar hose sheilding stuff, if you had some of that you could adapt N/A hoses for the heater ones, then you need to get creative with the long one to the expansion bottle, i may have some used ones in the pile if you get desperate.

I take it these things are braided due to the closeness they run to the turbo? Can non braided pipes be used and these wrapped in some of that material used to wrap exhausts?
Found this:

It's a USA site but it gives the idea.......

I think you'll have to bite the bullet Jon, that's the prices I paid on my BX.
I'd changed the turbo and i thought while the engines out I'll replace all the hoses inc. the 2 short ones for the fuel heater.
I too was amazed at the prices, but once done it's peace of mind.
Go for it.

Don't you guys have places like Pirtek or EnZed hoses over there?
These are companies that specialise in making up hoses for all types of applications.
The guys who come here with their race cars all seem to have braided hoses hanging out everywhere and judging on the flashy colours, I'm sure they are a made up variety.
It doesn't always mean that because they're custom made they have to be more expensive. A Cit owner over here recently had a speedo cable made up for his 16V. He got it made about 75mm longer than the standard one and including postage it was almost half the price of the Cit one,

I know, extremely expensive. When I did my HG I found one of mine very shaky, and have had to shorten it, but it really needs replacing, certainly before driving to Liverpool next w/end [:(] I would also be very interested to learn of an alternative!

Jon,
Just asked Brad where they get all theirs for the turbo V8s and others, and he tells me that the guy who does the mechaincals and fit ups has his own machine to do it with so it's obviously not all that a big deal to get them made.
He tells me that the prices aren't cheap with in some special cases one fitting costing in excess of A$100 as they have to be of the highest quality.
He reckons that Pirtek out here would do them so there's no reason to believe they wouldn't also do them over there.
Another option is anyone involved in racing or tuning including turbo conversions. I wonder if Dave Baker at Puma could (would) advise or alternatively, Brodies (BBR)?
The main things they need to have is access to the fittings and a crimping machine. They also use a special type of radial jawed tube cutter capable of going through the braiding without leaving it looking frayed.

Radial jawed cutter?
How about a plumbers pipe cutter for copper pipe, they cut stuff without fraying it. You may have to stick something non-squeezable down the pipe to stop it from collapsing.

I bit the bullet and ordered them, managed to get a decent discount. I did think about Pirtek and the like, but the way that I looked at it was that they would have to have the old pipes as a pattern, and I really can't afford for the car to be off the road longer than a couple of days.
Work starts Monday 14th Feb. There can't be much more left to do on this BX now surely?
What I will do is keep the old braided pipes, maybe we can look at using them as a pattern and see how much it will be for Pirtek or the like to copy them? I can't see that many BX owners will be willing to shell out £150 quid plus for three hoses when you can get a running MOT'd BX for less right now.

I suppose one answer would be to get a steel pipe bent to shape and connect it with straight rubber to the existing stubs. When I had one go my friendly mechanic and I considered this alternative as we were not anxious to introduce copper into the system as we didn't know what the consequences for corrosion would be. We eventually gave up and I paid £60 for the pipe from the header tank as it didn't seem worth the effort for one hose.
Steel pipe wouldn't be the easiest to work and would not only need bending but some form of ring forming or fixing to the ends to stop the hose slipping off. However someone may be able to do it at a reasonable price.
