Diesel with a Lambda sensor with display

Post by sooty »

Browsing the net the other night, someone asked if a diesel could use a Lambda sensor with a suitable display indicating the oxygen levels when tuning the fuel system.
Good idea, yes??
Anyone seen or heard if this is possible.

Why not ?
The Lambda figure for petrols is optimised for 1, for diesels the Lambda figure is 2.
Honestly I dont think it is the best way to optimise a diesel engine using a Lambda tester. Instead you go for a soot particle test.

Yes, but could be used or setup while you are motoring doing your tests for best fuel settings.

Not really, as the relationship between soot levels (which most people limit their fuelling too) and oxygen levels is not very simple. Its easy in a petrol engine, as both fuel and air amounts can be changed, (thus increasing or decreasing the oxygen content) but harder in a diesel where the amount of air is constant. You might say that the amount of air is changed in a diesel by the turbo, but adding more air actually cleans the exhaust of soot particles.
