Timing belt renewal, Should I?

hello!
I snook this in the Cit section its actually a Peugeot 205 but its the same engine they put in the 1.0 ax so... its nto that bad really...
Anyway, the wife has a 205, i know the timing belt was changed by the previous owner but i dont know when or at what mileage as the doofus didnt date the invoice... clever...[B)]
its got 78k on the clock at the moment, would you think it a good idea to change the belt??

Apply the following rule to any car with a belt, and you won't go far wrong:
Unknown belt history = change it
You *know* you won't trust the car until you do.

While on the topic, my 306 DTurbo had a cambelt at 46k and now has 89k. Do I hang on at get it done at 100k or get it done next service which is 1k away?
I should stick to my 2cv. No cambelts or head gaskets to worry about!
Bit slower though...

How old is the belt?
I don't let mine go over 5 years regardless of the mileage.

5 years is far too long, 3 maximum.

That would work out at a new belt every 7K miles on my TD Xantia the way I use it now[;)]

The belt has been on for 3 years now. Sounds like I should get it done sooner rather than later!
Just a thought, has anyone done a gear kit for the PSA diesel as they have for the Land Rover Tdi unit?

A Cambelt costs £8.50 plus vat HOW MUCH IS A NEW ENGINE?????
Change your belt regularly it will pay in the long run.

If in doubt change the belt, it will only be at the back of your mind when you redline the thing through the gears, or set off on a long trip.

The belt may be cheap but fitting it isn't by the sound of things! I'm not fit to wield spanners myself and I prefer to have someone other than myself to blame when things go wrong!
That said, how difficult a job is it? The car has power steering but no air con.

My eBay AX Diesel - previous owner swore blind cam belt had been done at 50K, no receipts though.
Took cover off and nealy parped my pants at the perished bit of rubber that was there. Took a day of swearing and bleeding knuckles and several curses at everyone involved in the Haynes BOL (which didnt actually cover the 1.5D in any great depth).
Get it done, or buy a spare engine....[;)]

Wow! That is cheap. I think I shall hunt for more reasonable sounding sums.
