Xantia Antisink Depressurising W/O Engine Running

Post by Richard Gallagher »

As I'm in the process of dismantling one Xantia for breaking, whilst at the same time repairing another with a broken cam belt, my concentration on each job is not quite what it should be (I'd be fine if I was female).
The result of which was that had I started to remove engine parts from the 'Breaker car' when I realised that I hadn't depressurised the suspension, which is fitted with anti-sink and Hydractive.[:(]
Now as those in the know realise, in order to do this both Haynes and Peter Russek manuals state that in order to depressurise the suspension the engine needs to be running and if this is not possible then the car needs to be taken to a dealer because of the specialist equipment required.
This left me with a choice, a green LHM shower[xx(], or take a shell to a dealer on the back of a breakdown truck at great expense[V].
Unusually for me I then engaged my brain and came up with the solution[:)].
Fit the alternator drive belt onto the hydraulic pump pulley, then loop the other end of the belt over the chuck of an electric drill which I then pulled away from the pump in order to tension the belt. I then used the drill as a power source to spin the belt/pump.
I'm very pleased to report that this method has done the job of building up enough pressure to release the antisink and Hydractive valves allowing the system to be depressurised safely[:D].
I doubt that I'm the first to think of this solution but it may be of use to someone else who is as dopey as me in the frist place!!

Very interesting to know that one can manage it with an electric drill! I thought the pump pulled a couple of HP, so I wouldn't even have thought of the idea!

I'd often thought of this one for reviving of dead CXs in order to get them on a trailer. Good to know that it worked for you!

1 Hp is approx 745Watts.
Most drills are approx 500Watts.
The chuck on the drill is less than 1/3 the diameter on the pump.
Fits the bill nicely then.
