Challenge 405 instrument panel lighting

Post by reades »

Hi
Got 405 GLD 1905 diesel H reg 1991
(This is an update to a messgae posted on 29-Jan-2005, thanks to everyone who replied.)
I have got a problem with the instrument panel illumination - non-illumination to be precise. The bulbs have been replaced. Lights come on for a few minutes a couple of times a week. They go on and off randomly, not realted to bumps, corners, temperature, or phase of the moon.
I would like to find out which connector (out of white, white, yellow, green, blue) and pin(s) on the instrument panel should be powering these lights. The Haynes manual points to a pin that is blanked out on my car. I wonder is there a subtle way to read this information? Or do you have any ideas?
Thanks
Rod

This is useful info, thank you. Unlike most other cars I have had the pleasure of working on the wire colours don't appear on the haynes wiring diagram.

An extra piece of info. My model is one that doesn't come with dimmer rheostat. I've spent ages under the steering column with a torch looking for it!

Have a look inside the plastic trim around the steering coloum.
Have a look where the dimmer should be fitted incase Peugeot left the plug with a link in it for the lower spec cars, Knowing Peugeot wiring anything is possible!
Peugeot doesnt really use a colour coded wiring system, Look for the small black numbers printed on the wires to work out whats in front of you.

Yippee fixed it!!
Managed to identify which pin does what on the instrument panel. There was power ok, so problem must be with the instrument panle itself. Took this off. And followed the circuit around, wasn't quite as scary as I'm imagined. The printed circuit is effectively 2 layered. Connections between them are made by screws that go through both and into the plastic. One of these wasn't conducting so tightened it down a bit and bingo lights came on.
Now I can see what speed I'm doing at night now. Driving past speed cameras has been a bit like russian roulette.
Thanks for all your help.
