406 2 button plip key.

406 2 button plip key.
I've recently bought a 406 (97 on a P) Unfortunately the remote central locking doesn't work off the key, which I believe is a common problem.I took my key to a Peugeot main stealer to get it checked out,and their prognosis was it wasn't giving out a signal (they have a box of tricks to test for this) So how much is a new key then? I asked.£97 something to you sir!! plus a charge to get the code from Peugeot themselves,as the blue 'code card' was not passed onto me when I bought the car.
So I purchased 2 plip keys off e bay, took them to the main dealer to get them checked, great they both emit a signal!!
According to them though, once a key has been programmed it cannot be done again,so they said I'll have to buy a brand new receiver, and 2 key fobs for £250 ish!!
Does anyone know if this is right or are they just trying to take me for a ride? Is there another way around it ie could I get an aftermarket alarm fitted which would work the central locking remotely, and by pass the keypad immobiliser?
Any help greatly appreciated!
ps I never had any problems with my old 405 infra red system!!

Hi
For some reason last year the remote key on my 98 306 stopped working and both my main and spare remote key wouldn’t re-program. My local dealer also tried to re-program a key and said that it needed a new receiver then they quoted around 100 pounds, I said it’s okay I’ll stick with putting the key in the door.
Anyway to cut a long story short .... I fixed it by disconnecting the battery for half an hour. Then both of my keys could be reprogrammed, it did make me wonder if that’s all the dealer was going to do and charge me 100 pounds.
I don’t know if it would work on a 406, but it can’t hurt to give it a go. If you still have the original radio make sure that you have the code to unlock it.
Cheers
Chris

Bugger, that’s a shame. ‘Rebooting’ my 306 got the remotes working again. I did have to do the old spare key in the ignition re-programming trick, but it’s been fine for almost year …. mind you I maybe tempting fate here.
Sorry, but I don’t have any other advice I can give you. I guess you either have to give a shed load of money to a dealer or just keep using the key in the door method.
But I must admit after being used to the remote opening you do feel like a second-class citizen have to use the door lock. Those two months when mine was not working was hell [8)]

Just bought a 93 306 and got three plips with it. Unfortunately only one worked. Tried the reprogamming trick - spare key in ignition - and now the second plip works and the first no longer. The third had dud batteries, which I haven't replaced yet.
Perhaps tomorrow I will disconnect the battery, or a sutable fuse to reset the whole lot. But it sems as if it will only accept one plip at a time. All are the two button deadlocking type.

Also remeber not all 406s had RF plip, Some of the early low spec L & LXs had the 2 button infra red plip.
