Preheat light thingy

My Xantia starts first time, everytime. But i've noticed the preheat light doesn't come on. I always allow time for the preheat to work incase its just a dash bulb anyway. How do i know if it is working or if its just a bulb?[:I]

The HDi engines only use their glowplugs in sub-zero temperatures (about -4 C or less, I think) so its normal not to see the light come on at all, or just flash on for less than a second.
Personally I wouldn't worry about it if the car starts fine!
