1990 405 SRi coolant temp

Unread post by paradox »

Hi, I have a 1990 405 SRi, XU9J2, English build.
Whilst my coolant temp gauge does not list the actual numbers I presume they match up with the other models where the actual numbers are listed on the same gauge.
Driving around town sitting in a bit of traffic the temperature will vary from what would be 80-90 degrees, when sitting in traffic for a long time it will rise to slightly above the 90deg mark but will drop back down. I'm under the impression this is pretty normal.
During drives through quite hilly country (I live in New Zealand), going up a steep hill in traffic the temperature began to creep past the 90deg mark today and got to what would be about 93-95deg. Soon after this we reached flat ground and picked up some speed and naturally the temperature dropped back to below 90deg.
Now the temperature has never gone past around halfway between the 90 and 100deg mark and I know I'm being paranoid but I'd just like to check if these are acceptable temperatures for an L-Jetronic XU9J2?
When cruising steadily the temperature will easily sit well below 90deg, it is just in steep uphill country where you're revving the motor a bit it will hover around/a fraction above 90deg that I am questioning.
The single fan is definitely working, with a low and high speed but I have to say the low-speed fan seems to be on quite a lot but from what I read this is quite normal.
What are the official numbers for the XU9J2 thermostat, fan cut in/out temps etc?
I'm sorry this is probably a totally paranoid post but the last thing I want to do is blow the headgasket or worse on this motor.

Those temperatures are fine for a 405 SRI mate.
On the U.K. 405s Peugeot fitted blanking plates to the front grill, Removing them helps the airflow to the radiator, If these are fitted to cars in New Zealand try removing them to get more air to the radiator if your really worried.
To remove the grill you need to undo 2 x 10mm bolts, 1 in each top corner of the grill & 2 x screws, 1 in each bottom corner of the grill between the slats.
Unclip the black plastic bonnet safety catch, The clip just slides off if its still there & then the grill just lifts off.
You will see the 2 blanking plates if fitted to the grill, They are just held in with a metal spring clip.
WARNING: The cooling fan can run even with the ignition turned OFF! Make sure the engine is cold first.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping you'd see this post, being a great source of 405 information.
I'll have a think about removing the blanking plates.

No worries mate, I try to be helpful when I can, lol
Ive no idea if the blanking plates are fitted to New Zealand spec 405s but its worth a look.
