Xantia Ribbed Belt tensioner : Which one

Post by Philjw »

I have a 97 Xantia 1.9TD Estate with aircon.
I am about to investigate a grumbling which seems to be coming from the region of the alternator belt or perhaps the aircon pump. Changing the tensioner is my first thought but GSF list two set ups - N13179 which also seems to need N13179B and N13171
Here is the listing from the on line store:
N13179 RIBBED BELT TENSIONER XANTIA 1.9TD + AIRCON 38.00
N13179B RIBBED BELT TENSIONER XAN 1.9TD + AIR 96> SELL WITH N13179 34.00
N13171 RIBBED BELT TENSIONER XAN 1.9TD + AIR 96> 43.50
Can anyone (Jon?) tell me the difference and which set I need please?

Check the belt tension is correct first - mine occasionally loosens itself off sufficiently for the tensioner to rattle as you pull away. Unless I'm corrected, the tensioner itself is a bit of a nause to replace. Also have you recently replaced the aux belt? - there are a few different sizes and the difference is only millimetres. Get the wrong one...
Heard it, seen it, fixed it ;-)

To be honest, I can't remember. I think that on 97> diesels with aircon you have an upper then a lower (roller) tensioner, plus there is the N13179B which is basically a small spring tensioner device (which looks like a small shock absorber) that applies the tension. I'll try and provide a better answer a bit later, I'm trying to put my small children to bed right now!
