a smokey 405

Unread post by timburr »

hi, excuse my ignorance, but would too much oil in the engine cause it to smoke under the bonnet? i've had a look underneath and it looked like the smoke was coming from a flange where the manifold met the exhaust just before the cat, but i've since been told that it would only smoke if oil was burning. I've checked for split pipes but cant see any. the dipstick is reading above the mark, so could this excess be being forced out and dripping?
sorry to run on a bit, but when it comes to cars and engines i've got about as much knowledge as my dog!
thanks everyone

It is possible, is the smoke blue at all? And does it smell nasty? Burning oil reeks!

If oil had been spilt on to the exhaust pipe it will burn off when hot enough. You dont say how you indentified smoke was coming from the bonnet in the first place. Dodgy exhaust manifold gaskets are also can leak, had 3 pug diesels doing this.
