205 Wheelbrace - what the hell is this?

Hi guys.
I need to find out what the state of my 205's spare wheel is like. You lower the wheel cage with the wheelbrace and some sort of enormous screw in the boot that looks like this-

Now my wheelbrace looks like this at the end-

..which will NOT inscrew it - the lump at the end stops you using it as any kind of screwdriver.
Have I been given the wrong wheelbrace?

You've been given the wrong tool. What you should have is a short wheel wrench with a curved 'T' piece welded on the end. The idea is that the 'T' sits in the rounded groove. Altogether, it's a rotten piece of kit, so what I've done on my Xantia is to remove the wheel holder screw and weld a wheel nut on to the top of the groove. Now I can quickly use a rachet to lower the spare.

2nd the above.
If its like the cage on my Xantia,you may only have to undo it a little bit,say 5-6 turns.Then from underneath,lift up the wheel cage,& release the catch.Then lower it down.Give Peugoet a ring,i find they are very cheap on parts that i have brought.Or,pay a visit to your local scrappy for one.

If your boots loaded up,you dont have to empty everything out at the side of the road.
[:(!]Bad points=The spare gets cover`d in crap,you get cover`d in crap,the spare can get stolen.

Think the description is 'hook' end designed to pull off the road wheels hub caps. Sorry for this but "curved 'T' piece" just don't sound wright to me.

Another good tip is to make sure you use some anti seize compound on the screwthread of the cage bolt.
Makes life so much easier when you can actually wind the cage down! lol

And another tip!
Put the wheel in a big plastic bag,keeps it a bit cleaner then if you have to change it.And if like mine,the jack is in the spare wheel,stops that from rusting up as well.When i service mine,i allways put a bit of grease on the thread,& spray the jack with a bit of WD40.

I find a black bin bag & some tape works wonders, lol
Ive positioned the tyre valve right at the back of the car & have a tiny hole in the binbag where I can check the tyre pressure & pump it up if needed.

I never know why the 205 had such a dammed annoying screw affair with lowering the spare wheel? My old 504 has the same spare wheel carrier slung underneath. To lower it you open the boot, and pull a handle. The whole effort works like a bonnet catch.
