Brake pedal causes RHS indicator problems

Unread post by jak »

Hi - first time Citroen owner - Citroen Xantia 1.9D '94.
I've got an electrical problem related to the brake pedal.
Everytime I press the pedal the RHS indicator light on the dash lights up slightly and the rear brake light on the RHS fades - the RHS indicator lights on the front and back also turn on slightly.
When the RHS indicator is turned on and the brake pedal not pushed everythings fine - but when pushed the indicator speed gets faster and the lights fade as described above.
The LHS indicators and brake lights are not affected by this at all and are working perfectly.
The only bulbs that I've changed in the time that the problem has started are the headlamps (which are working fine and not affected by this issue also).
From other posts on this website this appears to be a cross-signal in the wiring however as it relates directly to the indicators can anyone provide me with a good starting place for solving this problem?
Thanks and great website!

Sounds like both the RHS brakes light and RHS indicators have lost their earth points, which physically would be the same.
Start your problem search in the outer RHS rear lamp - look for any obvious earth point which may have sheared or is badly corroded.

Is your car fitted with a towbar and associated electrics.
If so it may be worth checking out towbar electrics for short circuits.
Had a similar problem recently myself and it really did make a mess of some of the wiring.

There's no towbar on it - I'm going to check for earth points on the rear lights as described above - only difficulty is waiting till Saturday when I've got daylight to work on the car!
Thanks for the replies - Jak.
