Will this fit?

Post by Stuart McB »

Just a quickie. It's time I got a proper sump key as my 8mm square bar is looking alittle worn.
Will this fit Xsara sump plug with an 8mm square plug.
98710 ALLEN KEY-17mm General Use. GEARBOX DRAIN PLUGS (GSF part #)
Any one know. [:D]

Have difficulty beliving a 17mm hex key would fit an 8mm square hole!

I know it says 17 mm but it also says Sump plug drian key. Check the part number out on the on-line shop. That's why I'm asking.

These things are often made as a square bar attached to a hex head (17mm in your case - often the largest mm spanner in a toolkit?) with a hole bored through it for a tommy bar. Sounds just like the one I use! - bought it for my Renault 21!

Think I'll stick to my old 8mm square.

Why would anyone make a tool that has an 8mm square shaft and a 17mm hex-head drive? The only logical concept is to have an 8mm square shaft and a 1/2" square ratchet drive on the other end.

I did! Filed mine from a bolt - cost nothing but a few minutes' work.

Why not just simply grind down a cheapy "T" bar that they use in socket sets to 8mm and use that?
Can't see any reason to need a ratchet anyway. I know someone who just did that to do an oil change on his new Renault.

Sorry, dnsey, I didn't aim my comment at inventive individuals like you and me (I've also made a similar device for my XM) but at tool manufacturers.

I have one of these things which I fitted nicely in a ring spanner, with a tie wrap, ideal so you dont lose it in the oil....
Its like a 1/2 square at one end, with a hole through it, with a 17mm hex bit in the middle, and an 8mm square at the other, I bought it 3 years ago when we used to have a Renault 5, but found it fits all the other Citroens I have had. This may be where the 17mm hex bit in your description comes in.
